By LAWRENCE VAN GELDER
ris Blond" is a bittersweet romantic comedy that serves as a reminder of a time when frequent film imports from Italy and France constantly enriched what has come to be known as the quality of life in New York.

Not every film was a "400 Blows," "Breathless" or "Claire's Knee," or even "Cinema Paradiso" or "Il Postino," nor did it herald the arrival of a new wave or a new auteur.

But even the modest among these films enlightened audiences about new directors, new actors, other cultures, other landscapes and other attitudes and customs.

So in its skilled, commercially entertaining way, "Iris Blond," imported from Italy and filmed in Belgium, can be appreciated for its window on other worlds and its grown-up attitude toward love.

For those who cherish the hallmarks of European style, let it be said that "Iris Blond" reaches its denoument in classic fashion in a Brussels railroad station and on a stage before an ecstatic young audience.

Mixing well-acted comedy, stylish pop music and an informed eye for the promises and perils of romance, "Iris Blond" stars Carlo Verdone, its director and co-author, as Romeo Spera.

Like his namesake, Romeo, a composer, keyboardist and band leader, is not lucky in love. Closing in on 50 when the film opens in Italy, he is being informed that his latest love has been betraying him with a married member of the band, which means that both Romeo's relationship with the woman and the band are finished.

Like any sane person whose life has collapsed around him, Romeo heads for a popular fortuneteller (Nuccia Fumo), known as the Saint, and in a richly comic scene played from a wheelchair and behind smoked glasses, she tells him of his destiny.

It resides with a woman named for a flower who is a singer to boot. Well, in a twinkling, Romeo has a gig playing piano aboard a cruise ship, and he and a woman of a certain age named Marguerite (Andrea Ferreol) are exchanging goo-goo eyes across a crowded room.

In the terrestrial realm, Romeo and Marguerite (a flower of the chrysanthemum family) are soon sharing her digs in Brussels with her pampered white poodle, Corneille, and Romeo is accompanying Marguerite in her Jacques Brel nightclub act, playing "Ne Me Quitte Pas" ad nauseam.

So late one night Romeo uses a walk for Corneille as a pretext to escape Marguerite's company and her diet to gorge himself in a fast food outlet. And there he meets Iris (Claudia Gerini), a waitress who is not only named for a flower but also Italian, beautiful, half his age and possessed of legs that seem to stretch from Taormina to Milan. What's more, she can sing like an angel, as he discovers on a visit to church.

A few drawbacks: Iris drops men as fast as she attracts them, and although she is willing to let Romeo live with her while he composes for her and readies her for a career as a pop artist, there is to be no sex -- at least not with him.

In the end, everyone will achieve success, but in European films as in real life, success and a happy ending are two different things.
